Gas- Be Careful!

Good morning to all-

I hope you fellers are all doing well today- I hear it's getting hot out there in the Valley. Imagine that.

Anyway, here's a little heads up that I am sure you all know- as I did- but sometimes neglect.

I took my old fishing boat out for a run last week, and it started and ran like a champ- for about three minutes. then it just slowed and slowed then quit on me. would not restart. Hell of a paddle back to the ramp, I'll tell you. So I took the rig back to the repair shop and we started in on it. When we took the gas line off and pumped a little bit of the brand new from the station gas- there aren't that many places around here to find non-ethanol gas for outboard motors- and fellers, that "new" gas looked like someone had poured a quart of milk in the gas tank. Water, and lots of it in the gas tank. We emptied out the tank- glad it was a six-gallon tank and not one of those monster tanks on big old boats- cleared the gas line and put a little fresh non-water gas. Motor started and it's been running every since.
So, the lesson learned- Just because the gas is supposed to be fresh and good and non- contaminated, don't assume that's so...

and the other lesson? Outboards don't run worth a damn on water...

you all be safe and keep well- Ed

Same thing just happened to my boss on his pontoon boat last week, but that was 30 gallons…
We had a few gas stations up here with multiple reports of lots of water in the gas as well, after a lot of the snow started to melt. Could've been coincidence, but my bet was the flanged lid on the tanks was leaking/cracked and getting runoff dripping into the tank....

Glad you caught it Ed, bummer about the paddle back. Good thing you're seasoned enough to keep paddles in your boat!

Y'all can report that stuff to State weights and measures out here. They will send a guy out usually to check.
