Does anyone recommend any products that will protect your hearing from gunshots but still allow you to hear your surroundings such as animal movement, snakes, any dangers really? I don’t like ear plugs cause It takes away a pretty important sense of… well hearing. I dont have great hearing to begin with so I need to protect what I got left! I’ve been looking at those ear buds that cancel loud noise but allow you to hear regular sounds. Wondering if anyone uses them successfully? Happy thanksgiving!

Funny you bring that up, I have been thinking about the same thing. I have no experience with any, so I'll be interested in feedback as well. I suspect good ones will be expensive, based on how much my wife's hearing aids were.

I use beats earbuds for the gym and when you turn on "transparency" mode I can hear more surrounding noise than I can without them, when noise canceling is on its dead quiet. For shooting I've used the walker earmuffs. It quiets when you shoot and when you aren't shooting you can talk and hear normal.

Any one of the better hearing buds or earmuffs have that. I use them for shooting but also hunting, because of the shooting. Most have volume control that allows for hearing animals, people talking etc but shut out quick sharp noises above damaging db range.

Wish they would have been around 50 years ago when I damaged my hearing.

I have Seen walkers, I will probably get a pair for target shooting! I am Looking more for a ear bud style or some of these “moldable” inserts I have seen. Its hard to trust what they advertise though. If they don’t work your out anywhere from 60$ and up from there. If I end up buying a pair I’ll update this, just thinking maybe someone on here has a pair. For example I was looking at the brand decibulls that requires no batteries and can be molded to your exact ear. Just seems to good to be true!

The moldable, in your ear plugs never provided full ear closure for me. There always seems to be leakage of sound. The muff closes all outside sound off. Not to mention great ear warmth on cold windy mornings. In many cases, at the range, I use both because some guy with a 300mag and porting always seems to find a spot next to me.

Howard Leight, Walker, and Peltor makes some great over the ear electronic protection.

I personally use Peltor Tactical 500s, and I have a pair of Howard Leight Impact Sports if someone goes with me.

The key to the over the ear ones - REPLACE the foam pads with Gel Cups. I cannot stress enough how much more comfortable they are. You can get Gel Cups for all the major brand ones, they are ~20 bucks and make a huge difference. That "clamping" pain you get from over the ear hearing protection is really annoying, and if you wear glasses / safety glasses the pain from them being smooshed into your head sucks. With the Gel cups - that all goes away..... I will never go back to using the "stock" foam cups. Everyone that wears mine with the Gel Cups looks amazed at how much more comfortable they are.

As far as review wise - the Peltors are nearly double the price of the Howard Leights, but the Peltors have a higher DB reduction, are more comfortable, bluetooth, and I like the noise reduction / amplification better. However the Howard Leights were ~60 bucks when I bought them, lower profile than the Peltors, and the sound reduction / amplification works well. I have my Peltors for about a year, and the Howards for ~6-7 years.

I also have for my Peltors a headband cover/pad by Flatline Fiber (made in the USA) and it makes the headband a bit more comfy - but has a little latch where I can clip the hearing protection to my beltloop / bag / carrier / etc. Super handy and well made.

I have several pairs of Pro Ears ear muffs and really like their performance great for sound reduction on gun shots , very good for hearing enhancement of sounds you want to hear. Mine also work for listening to music or radio communications too. I have been using mine for over 10 years now. I will have to try a pair of their new ear buds in the future.

I have tried that a couple of times, but I never have enough time to put them in due to where and how I hunt. I really need something that I can keep in and still hear normal sounds, that doesn't interfere with wearing a hat and glasses and such.
