A good friend has given me his deceased father's M1 carbine with scope, my friend is not a hunter and will never use it. i mostly hunt small game. but would like to try for javelina next year - i plan on using the 30-06 but with a 150 grain shell - sound reasonable? Also, i'm told that when field dressing a javelina, take only the loins and backstraps, the remainder is edible....true?

I would buy some 130 gr for it, ya it sounds reasonable. No take the whole thing, neck meat makes good burger and front quarters are good to. Plus if you leave any part of the meat in the field you could be sited with a ticket from the brush cops for wasting game meat. A Big No-No.

I shoot a .270 and got a nice piggy 2 years ago, exit wound a bit large. Keep it all, mine made great chorizo. Handle the stink gland properly when skinning and meat will be clean.

I am a little confused as you started out by saying you have acquired a M1 carbine and then mentioned hunting javelin with .30-06 using a 150 grain bullet. Are you planning on using the M1 carbine for javelin or a .30-06? Either will work, the range will be greatly reduced for the .30 carbine round as apposed to a .30-06 round though.

Sam any idea what unit your thinking of putting in for? I think I might put in myself for first time along with a friend from San Diego.
I have a savage axis 223 with cheap 3x9 scope it came with. And a ruger American 243 that I haven't fired or scoped.
I thought a 30-06 was too much rifle but these guys have way more experience then me.
I know we talked about doing some rabbit just work has been busy for me. I may be willing to loan you the rifle I do not end up taking or using. Just get with me later on and we can work something out.
