I'm writing an article on the history of elk in Arizona and was hoping some of you would share your thoughts/memories on the following question:
"What is your favorite/funniest memory involving elk?"
There's a tight word count so I'm looking for shorter (2-3 lines) bits. I'll need your full name and a bit of an "elk-related" bio for it to be used in the publication (Example: Joe Smith, who has hunted elk for the last three years).
About 33 years ago, my [then] pregnant wife and I pulled into our favorite campsite one afternoon and an elk fawn jumped up out of the grass and ran off. I grabbed my bow and took off hunting while she stayed in the camper shell reading. About an hour later momma elk came along looking for her baby, and after a little searching stuck her head right in the back of the camper shell. My wife said "hi", the startled elk jumped back, and then continued her search. (Mike Davidson - 35 year elk hunter)
In my first year of archery elk hunting, we woke up early and could hear the elk bugling. I could also hear them coming up the road. I looked at my watch and I thought we could not shoot until 6:30 AM. It was only 6:25 AM. So I grab my bow hoping to keep up with the bull and shoot him at 6:30 AM. He was only about 20 yards away when he walked past me. Still a rookie. Fourth year elk hunter 2019.
Started off the morning leaving camp in a driving snow blizzard. While standing under a Juniper tree trying to stay dry while watching literally dozens of vehicles pass by on the trail 50 or so yards away 3 big bulls stepped out from the trees about 70 yards away. Through the snow, they couldn't see or smell me. It was a relatively easy harvest.
