I just picked up a blue 4 inch Ruger GP 100 357 revolver.
I have always wanted one of these since they were introduced way back when.
Almost everyone seems to go with the stainless version. I decided to go with the blued one.
It really is a solid well built revolver. The finish on the metal in my opinion is OK. No where
near the quality of a Smith & Wesson. That's OK with me though. I bought this gun to use it,
not to be a safe queen. It came with a ugly Hogue grip and a plain front sight.
I switched the grip for one from Altamont. It is rubber with checkered rosewood inserts. It is similar to the one that Ruger offers, but nicer, I believe. It feels just right in the hand now.
I also swapped the plain front sight with a factory red ramp one. Much better than the plain one in my opinion. The trigger is pretty nice right out of the box. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I have only dry fired it with snap caps. I will try and get out this weekend.
Buds had these for $509 shipped. That's a heck of bargain for a real solid 357 Mag revolver.

Sweet. 357 revolver is one of my favorite handgun Congrats
Reminds me of my Ruger .357 Security Six. I absolutely loved that gun and wish now I had never sold it. Go figure it's predecessor is the GP100.

"However, and this is the real reason why these guns are a solid buy, they will simply out last any other DA revolver over thousands of Magnum rounds. (With the exception, of course, of Ruger's follow-on piece, the GP-100.) If one bought a Security Six, one could expect a lifetime of full use and still be able to hand it to one's children with nary a problem. I once knew of an indoor range that had one as a rental gun and it digested, by their estimate, some 1,400,000 rounds with no parts breakages and minimal maintenance. That is the essence of a good deal!"

I loved my Ruger .357 Security Six. It went to my best friend as he had sold its twin and regretted it. When he passed his family offered to give it back but I just couldn't do it. Truth be told he had to actually buy it for me as I was too young.

I shot a coyote in WA. at 75 yards with a .357 revolver. Luck? Maybe. LOL. But I do believe a little skill helped too...

Nice. Just got the SP101 4.2 inch Match Champion in 357. My dream gun. Went with the SP to make it more of a pack gun with its smaller frame and grip. Haven’t shot mine either, going to Ben Avery on Thu. Congrats on your Ruger!
I have the S&W 686 in the 4". Love that gun. If I had not found a great deal on mine, I would have bought the Ruger. I have a couple other Rugers and love them.
First gun I ever bought was a .357 King Cobra. Man I love that gun. 357 is my favorite handgun cartridge. That is a great price too, I like Buds layaway program.
I had one (stainless w/6" barrel) and never used it. I finally sold it and have regretted it ever since. Mine came with the rubber grip with wood inlay. Beautiful pistol. Only thing that made it better was I bought it for $375 (at Clint's Well of all places - 2004) and sold it for $650.

Thanks guys.
I'm really liking this GP100. It's pretty heavy too. I'm looking at getting a chest holster for it eventually. Probably a Kenai from Gunfighters Inc.
I used to own a stainless 6" Ruger Security Six 357 Mag in the 80's. I sold it to a friend. I liked that gun. I miss it to this day.
357 Mag is a great caliber. Ruger makes great revolvers for sure.

You're not alone. I prefer the blue myself, much easier to clean especially if you reload and shoot something nasty like Unique or 2400. Even 296, my favorite, takes a lot of scotchbrite and Hoppes #9 to clean up stainless.

My first handgun was a GP-100 4" Stainless. Bought it back in the late 90's, second generation if I remember correctly. I traded it for something lighter because it was to heavy for my wife to hang on to. Wish I never did, the gun I traded it for did not last long before I got rid of it. I have since replaced it with a Blued 4" Security Six and she likes it a lot because it is lighter and easier for her manage.

I think you meant the security six is the predecessor to the gp100. The gp100 is the successor.
