Skulls

Im slowly working on an AZ skull collection, Id like a set of predator and fur bearing mammal skulls to display. Kind of like the squirrel or trout challenge. Some will be easier than others. So a question…..skunks…..not exactly looking forward to that one, but also unsure of how to acquire one. Target of opportunity, anyone have success calling, or would trapping be a better option? Looks like raccoon is daylong hours statewide, anyone ever pursue them intentionally?

I see skunks occasionally, not often during the day, though. Horizontal mine shafts/adits are a good place to look. If you trap one, good luck! lol

I have seen some raccoon sign in a few places, I have not intentionally hunted them.

Any Campground, Leave some Baloney on ground, you will have skunks. We had some at Squirrel camp, along with coyotes cruising around in AM's.

Actually, I take that back. I was out one night in Iowa with my brother and a friend of his who does nighttime coyote hunting with thermal optics (legal in Iowa) on AR platform rifles. We spotted some raccoons up in a tree at a couple hundred yards and took a few shots at them. That is the closest I have come to "hunting" raccoons.

I came face to face with a spotted skunk once at the back of a horizontal mine shaft. Spotted skunks are very cool, I would like to have something (like a hat or whatever) made from spotted skunk pelts!

I don't know much about trapping regulations in AZ, but I know a couple cans of cheap tuna in a live trap will pull in skunks and raccoons all night long.

trapping one would probably be easiest the problem is unless you're trapping a nuisance critter at your house you need a trapping license and have to take an exam.

They're easy to attract with whatever smells. Cat food, dog food, fish guts, tuna, etc. Same with raccoons.

You are allowed to spotlight raccoons at night in AZ during some parts of the year. Raccoons are almost always near sources of water because they don't have saliva glands and have to "wash" their food if it is dry to be able to eat it.

I have my trapping license and a couple of cheapy traps, one has had a skunk in it before, but I didn’t want to deal with it so it was set free.

I've also heard you can call raccoons pretty readily during their mating season (December/January) using raccoon fighting sounds from an e-caller.

It's not a big deal of you can trap one away from your house just shoot it, let it spray, then cut the head off (wear gloves, foxes and skunks are high-percentage carriers of rabies).

Dawn dish soap + hydrogen peroxide in water is supposed to be the best way to clean skunk-spray and get rid of the stench.

I may have to break out the traps, we had 3 skunks roaming our neighborhood a year ago, our ‘hood borders some state trust land and I may be able to pull one from a wash in there. Or I can try where I got the last one, might even be able to get a raccoon out of that spot.

I see A LOT of skunk in the early mornings as I walk to deer blind spots, mostly on elevation, they seem very nocturnal as I'll spot them while driving 2ish hours before/after sundown/sunup.

If you have chickens you need donkeys

or a good fence and coop and a 12 gauge
I know we see more skunks in the low valley areas. seems like they are always around orchards and tall crops (corn, and grain).
I have a small orchard in the back (16 pecan trees) and around this time of year when the doves start making nests, skunks start showing up, haven't seen one in the tree, but I am guessing they are just opportunistic that one of the squirrels are going to bump an egg out

Burnt Corral campground, Apache Lake. Just bring your dog with you to draw the skunks in. Ask me how I know 😁

How do you know? :)
Enjoying a nice evening lakeside by the campfire, had two skunks pay us and our former dog a visit. Had to be a pretty comical site watching us move so fast to get into the camper
