Where the Jacks at?

Hey everyone, I'm new to this site.

I moved back to Tucson from Minnesota a few weeks ago, and have been out hunting 3 or 4 times a week since. I mostly head out to the Redington Pass area, and have had some success. 2 nice Cottontails, 1 squirrel, 1 Western Diamondback, got less than 10 ft from a Ring-Tailed Cat, and have been stalked by a pretty decent sized lion. I usually go out about 45 minutes before sunset. Haven't tried the morning hours yet.

A good amount of my trips out there I haven't seen anything, been looking around some new areas and have found some pretty massive piles of rabbit dumpings, so I know they are around...

Open to some new areas though, if anyone has any good ideas?

I've never shot / eaten a Jack before, and I'd love to try. I've had PLENTY of Minnesota Cottontails and Snowshoe Hares, but no Jacks.

Considering their size, I'm more than stoked to find a couple of them.

Also, if anybody here is looking for a hunting buddy, none of my friends here hunt, and it would be nice to go out with company, maybe someone who knows the area better.

I carry a 12 gauge and a deadly accurate .22. After my lion experience, I carry both. When the sun starts going down and I can't effectively use the scope on my .22 anymore, I switch to the 12. I've so far shot all of my Arizona game animals with my 12 gauge, and recently bought the .22 for a little more fun/challenge, but haven't yet spotted a hopper while it was in my hands. I've got the .22 zeroed in to do dime sized groups at 50 yards, so I'm MORE than excited to lay out a Jack 75 or 100 yards away.

Okay, that's enough of an intro / ramble.

If anybody knows of awesome areas to hunt around Tucson, or wants to go out, let me know!

I'd also like to go out for lions, coyotes, bobcats, birds, squirrels, snakes, etc. I'm pretty much into hunting ANYTHING. I have a bow also for archery only hunts.

Went out coyote hunting the other day, didn't get any coyotes but jumped this jackrabbit on the way back from one of the stands. I hadn't killed anything with my AR yet, and he was running broadside at around 80 yards or so... I thought it was a good shot. Nailed him center mass, but I was able to salvage his hind half and shoulders. Jacks are good eating.

Nice Jack, nice shot, nice rifle!

I love eating Jacks.. I don't know what's wrong with people who say they aren't good to eat.

So far, every way I've tried to prepare them has been damn good. I have a few lbs I deboned in the freezer, trying to figure out my next culinary concoction...
I want to get out one of these days and shoot 5 or 6 of them, and make bratwurst or sausage or something. I think it would make good sausage.
Just had some Gumbo that a friend made with some chicken and a jack that I took him, it was pretty damn good.
got 6 this past sunday, getting lazy and just taking straps and back let quarters, but between that, a mule deer, 100 something dove and quail and now about 15 jacks the garage freezer is filling up quick.
truck took a crap out there, freeze plug blew so i had to stop and put water in all the way home. buddy should be fixing this week.
i have a table mounted meat grinder somewhere, i should find that and make jack burgers with some pork shoulder mixed in for fat. bet that would be good.

mostly been making machaca out of them after they cook all day in the crock pot with some seasonings and onions, shred the meat and eat. brought a bunch in to work, i work with all women but they love to eat, so i had tortillas, cabbage, salsa all the rest and jack machaca....didn't tell them.
man they scarfed that up like there was no tomorrow. after their food settled i showed them the pics of me putting the jacks in the pot, then shredding them.
had a few turn sickly, but the majority loved them.

they would make a good pulled pork type bbq on a bun i bet also. if i get this blown freize plug put in by saturday, i'll be going out sunday again, got 200 sub sonics for $11 at LGS, same price as normal.

made a bunny bag with a chain to hang the foot from a tree, gloves, gallon freezer bags, walmart bags and trash bags for any non rabbit trash, small sharp knives as stone and a rod. plus i have a board with nails in the top and bottom and a rope so i can hang a bunny off the side of my truck and clean if no trees around. i keep 5 gallons of water in the back for washing stuff off, works pretty good.

This thread is a decade old. My advice on finding jack rabbits would be this. Find some creosote or sage country, not too thick but with enough cover for small critters to hide. Then, get there just after sun up and walk the hills and find some. I saw at least 7 or 8 jackrabbits in this manner at rabbit camp this year, and bagged two, and was there while several others bagged more.
