Wait a minute. The regs do not say that at all. Never ever has it been half hour after sunrise to half hour before sunset, LOL, Thats BALONEY. The regs say no artificial light, moonlight may not be used in take or pursuit of small game, in essence if you can see it during any daylight hours, ie, pre dawn or pre dark, its legal to pursue and take if in a safe manner.
No, you cannot takes rabbits, or any small game at night in AZ. Shooting hours are half hour after sunrise until half hout before sundown.

Bearfoot1,
Thank you for reminding me to get specifics before i shoot my mouth off. To get clarity on this issue, i called AZDGF today and spoke with an officer. My question to her was: is it lawful in AZ to hunt small game at night? Her reply: "NO, the current statutes must state clearly, by species, that night hunting is lawful (as with coyote, mtn lion). As such, no AZ small game are currently huntable after sundown or before sunrise." As for the sundown to sunrise rule-of-thumb thats the safety issue every responsible hunter knows, "is there enough light to see your target and well beyond?" If the wildlife officer on the scene does not agree with your estimation of "enough light to be safe" when you took that shot, you may be cited. i stick to the 1/2 hour rule so there are no doubts.

Thank you both for the clarification! I had a feeling my buddy was wrong when he said i could take rabbits at night; Since the regs said nothing about daylong. However, being a new hunter in Arizona, I wanted to check with you guys.

i have been hunting in az for about 18 months, still trying to decipher the regs. this forum is a great resource getting the info you need to avoid a serious fine.

I have a place in the northeast, near the NM border. It abuts a huge tract of State Land Trust property. It might be 3-4 years before I can live there but I can't wait to just step out my back door to hunt. In the meantime I joined this forum to learn and hunt vicariously through you guys LOL!

Thanks for the info and fix!

Welcome to AHT, veprjack. Where you living now ? Not going to hunt until you can live on your Land?
I'm currently in Maine so there's lots of hunting. But I'm in the southern part, which has really become a suburb of Boston. Trophy houses have blanketed anything near the ocean and lots of land has been posted. It would be a three hour+ drive for me to get into the Maine that most hunters think of. I guess I'm getting lazy in my old age - lol. I used to drive 8+ hours to hunt. Many of my hunting buddies have moved or married anti-hunting spouses so opportunities have slowly disappeared.

WARNING - RANT: It's amazing to see anti-gunners starting to impact Maine. We just barely passed the constitutional CCW by a hair! Transplants from MA, NY, CT and RI bring their politics with them and before they even figure out where Fifi is going to go to school, they're organizing marches to ban hunting, etc. I sure hope AZ doesn't suffer a similar fate.

I use a .22 pellet gun to dispatch small varmints and rabbits in back of my place. And I fish in the rivers and the ocean just off the beach in my kayak. Mostly I just hike to stay in shape for when I get out there to walk and hunt the desert, BLM and Trust land! When I get there I'll join a local range and connect with people through forums like this one!

Thanks!
