Hello! I've recently caught an itch for bear hunting! I'd love to get out and try to hunt every species in Arizona so while I'm waiting to get drawn for others I figured I would give bear hunting a shot. I've been looking into units 6A and 27 I know people who hunt both units for elk and deer but I don't know anyone that actually bear hunts. Does anyone have any experience in either unit? Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I’ve only killed them in Washington, somebody on this thread once described the taste of Arizona bears as “someone close to Nancy Pelosi”

Hope that gets you excited!!! Hahaha
Bears taste like what they've been eating. If you find one in acorns or pears they're fine. If you find one that's in a trash heap or some ranchers carcass dump, not so much.

Every bear we shot up in Washington was absolutely delicious. My first one is my profile pic here. Tastes better than a lot of deer do.

Man it would be just too easy to hunt them in a state back east where you can bait. Spray some molasses into a dead stump and drop some day-old donuts... wouldn't even be fair but man would it be fun.

One tip on bears is that you can kinda fool their hearing and you can definitely fool their eyes, because they are nearly blind, but you can NEVER fool their nose. They can smell stuff from miles away its ridiculous.

I was hunting 6A last weekend and found a place where there is obviously a bear living. I didn't see it but I bet I would if I had a couple days.

I've seen bears in 4A, 5BN, 5BS, 6A, 8, 9, 21, 22N, 22S, 23N, 23S, 24A, 24B

I've also seen bear sign in 10, 17A, 19A, 19B, 20A, 20C

I know where a number of them habit, I have just never had a hankering to hunt or eat bear. I know some love it but kinda like killing a rattlesnake. What for?

Every bear I've tried has been delicious. I've tried four different bears that other people have harvested and shared with me. Similar to pork, fatty meat. It's much more red in color than pork though.

I've heard that occasionally you can get a nasty bear, especially if it's been feeding off of dead elk or deer for a while. If you find em in the oaks or cactus though you should be good. Make sure you cook your bear meat well, to a temperature that kills all parasites. 90% of trichinosis cases in the United States come from eating undercooked bear meat.

To be honest there are bear in about every unit along and above and below the Rim as well as the SE parts of the state. I have seen bear in 7 both E and W. 27, 1, 6A, 5BS, 35A and some others that I am trying to recall. We have a pretty good bear population. I saw a sow in 7W that had three cubs and scared the hell out of me one year because when she winded me I was not sure if she was going to take the cubs and run or come at me. She took the cubs and ran. Boy was I relieved.

I’ve seen bears when I when I was little up around bear canyon lake, I believe that’s in 5A but I’m not sure cause I can never find that lake on OnX LOL! I do work nights tho so I’m usually getting off work at 2am and now I’m wondering if it’s worth even just going straight to 24b along the north west side of the unit after I get off work to try and glass out some bears but I’m not entirely sure their movement habits and feeding and drinking habits

Welcome to AHF!

I have killed a bear in 27, but not in 6A yet. I have also seen bears in 4B, 5BS, 22, and 29, and got them on trail cameras in a couple other units. There are a bunch of other units that hold bears. Lots of choices! Since I didn't draw any tags this year I will probably be picking up a bear tag...

Yeah I’m really wanting to get out and explore more of the units. I’m still a young gun, I turn 22 in a couple months so I got plenty of free time especially with my job however I wanna learn everything possible about hunting and always willing to learn! I’ve heard good things about 5bs a co worker saw a bear there last year while elk hunting! What are your opinions on guided hunts??
